She’s been in some giant movies, yes, but to these eyes, Kirsten Dunst has always been an art-house movie star – after all, her first leading role was in Sofia Coppola’s dreamy Virgin Suicides; she followed up the megahit Bring It On with The Cat’s Meow (a cinephile’s what-if movie where she played silent star Marion Davies for director Peter Bogdanovich); and after she burned out on franchises with Spider-Man 3, she was brought back from the brink by international cinema’s enfant terrible, Lars von Trier. Her performance in his 2011 masterpiece Melancholia was a startlingly raw portrait of mental illness and self-destruction; if its trailer is any indication, her starring role in the new drama Woodshock seems to be very much in that same vein.
Following the launch of Calvin Klein’s men’s underwear campaign starring the lead actors of the Academy Award–winning Moonlight, the brand has released its women’s underwear campaign shot by Sofia Coppola. The grainy black-and-white videos celebrate women ages 18 to 73, each handpicked by Coppola for the series. The director’s longtime muse Kirsten Dunst appears, as does Rashida Jones, Nathalie Love, up-and-coming actress Laura Harrier, Maya Thurman-Hawke (the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman), and Chase Sui Wonders (niece of Coppola’s friend, the designer Anna Sui). The true star of the campaign, however, is the inimitable Lauren Hutton, who at 73, makes showing off her skivvies look like a piece of cake. AMC is developing On Becoming A God In Central Florida, a 1990s-set one-hour dark comedy series, which has Kirsten Dunst attached to star and executive produce. The project, to be directed by The Lobster helmer Yorgos Lanthimos, hails from George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures, Sony’s TriStar Television and AMC Studios.
Written by Robert Funke and Matt Lutsky based on a spec script they wrote, On Becoming A God is a darkly comedic story about the cult of free enterprise and one woman’s relentless pursuit of the American Dream in the early ’90s. Recently widowed and left with nothing, minimum-wage Orlando water park employee Krystal Gill (Dunst) lies, schemes and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise — the cultish, flag-waving, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that drove her to ruin in the first place.
Funke, Lutsky, Dunst and Lanthimos executive produce alongside Oscar winners Clooney and Heslov (Argo) through Smokehouse. The project, in early development, will be overseen by Sarah Shepard for Smokehouse.
Spider-Man alumna Dunst recently starred in the second season of FX’s limited series Fargo, earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
